Story behind the song
One night before I became disabled I laid in my bed unable to sleep, so I pulled out my Bible and read the book of Job. I had always admired his faithfulness but I'd never read the book. I was transfixed and in awe with every page. As soon as I finished I wrote lyrics based on what I'd read, trying to understand the point of view of both Job and God.
The next day I sat at the piano and out poured the music. I would sing it over and over with a passion I'd never given any other song. I only used it twice in performance because it requires so much vocally and, at 7 min. and 20 secs, is really too long for your average audience.
I never dreamed that just a couple of years later my own life would be thrown into situations so much like his, I can barely believe it. So I rerecorded it with a new perspective and appreciation, not for Job's suffering, but God's response to his pleas. God, the Creator of all things, has a reason for every event in our lives. It is up to us to trust Him... for that is the very definition of FAITH.
Lyrics
"JOB" by Jeff Leslie 1980, 11/27/01
God, was it not enough they destroyed all my cattle and lands
Full of crops for which I worked my life
Now Im mourning the deaths of my sons and my daughters
Their families, though You spared my wife
But I cannot hold her, the one thing I cherish the most
For the sores which have covered my skin
This disease has transfigured me
Pain I can't stand any more
Tell me, why did this suffering begin
How can You let so much happen to one who's been true to You
So true to You
Have You forgotten my righteousness, my daily sacrifice
My sacrifice
What is the purpose for all of this pain
Am I just a pawn in some sad twisted game
Tell me what have I done to deserve such a fate
Is it worth the price? What could be worth this price?
My friends come to mourn with me, pray for me
Try to encourage with words of a man loving God
Though they see what's been done to me
How they believe that You love me is really quite odd
And yet they insist that my pain has been caused
By some sin or transgression that Ive said or done
Don't they see that Im blameless
If theres anyone Who has made a mistake
God, You are the One
Oh, what have I done?
(THE LORD)
Listen, Job, to My words in the whirlwind
Then let Me know when you can see you can still trust in Me
I, Who have laid this foundation you crawl upon
I am your God, your Creator and Cornerstone
Were you here with Me when before time first began?
Or did you breathe the first breath of life into man?
Who sheds the rain on the dry thirsty soil?
Who scattered the night with stars bursting with joy?
Can you shout with thunder through clouds in the night
0r awaken each morning with the promise of light?
If you can make seasons all change just in time
For the harvest to prosper, then show me a sign.
Span this clear sky with a rainbow of color
And I'll be the man and you the Creator.
How can you see all I've done and deny
That I have a plan for each day of your life?
Trust in Me now as you did once before
And the best that I have will be yours evermore.
(JOB)
Lord, it wasnt enough you restored all my cattle and land
But youve doubled my wealth here on earth
And You've blessed me with beautiful children again
By allowing my wife to give birth
And now I can hold her but, Lord, what I cherish the most
Is the love and forgiveness You've shown
For now life has new meaning and I will forever sing
Praises to You, my Lord alone
God, I will love You forever and I will be true to You
So true to You
For You have forgiven transgression and given a great new life
A brand new life
Now that I see my whole life a new way
Ill tell everyone in the world all the ways
You're bursting through all of my darkness with eternal light
Bursting through all of my darkness with eternal light
Eternal Light
Eternal Light
