Lyrics
But Sometimes She Could Scream
--D. Devine
--chorus--
Oh, he looks so peaceful there,
Sleeping in the moonlight,
A cat that’s got the cream.
… But sometimes she could scream.
v1)
Laura’s feeling restless,
Turning all the pages,
Looking for the place she lost
And who she used to be.
Leafing through the pictures, moving through the stages
Of a woman’s crawl from childhood to standing on her feet.
v2)
The man she loves is kindly,
Gives her gifts and flowers,
Never feels her emptiness
That settles like a rock.
She listens, fingers twisting, breathing in the hours,
Breathing out the silences that shout beneath the talk.
--chorus--
Oh, he looks so peaceful there,
Sleeping in the moonlight,
A cat that’s got the cream.
… But sometimes she could scream.
v3)
She tiptoes to the bedroom,
Lonely in the doorway,
Then bends to watch him dreaming,
Lays her hand upon his heart.
It’s beat so many years for her, she feels her own is breaking,
But staying any longer would tear her soul apart.
(v4)
She wants to leave a letter,
But it’s all already said,
And listening is a two-way street
He’ll never learn to drive.
She stumbles to the bathroom, weeping in the mirror,
Scrawls her life in lipstick in the message that she writes.
--chorus--
Oh, you looked so peaceful there,
Sleeping in the moonlight.
A cat that had the cream.
…But sometimes I could scream.
