Story behind the song
Probably a couple of things inspired. 1- The slogan "Just Say No" was having its run through the country, via a television campaign mostly. 2- In my own Bible study, I was learning how self-discipline is the cure for perhaps 95% of our personal problems.

When the world tries to lure us down the path it wants us to go God has already made a way out and it’s the word “no”. (v.2) ‘No’ gives you your rulership over things that once ruled you It’s the starting place for authority that God has given to you “No” is such a tiny little word but it puts you in charge of so much It’s the Mighty Mouse of our language and it packs a Superman punch. What a powerful word even when it’s hard to say “No” is a word of courage to take wherever you go It lets you look the world in the eye and tell it “no” (v.3) ‘No’ is a word of committment to the life God called you to. It keeps you from wasting time & energy on things your flesh wants to do ‘No’ is a word for leaders who first must use it on themselves And once they’ve learned self discipline they’re ready to lead someone else.
