Story behind the song
in the late 50s I was friendly with a young Austrian girl at work and I asked her if she'd like to go out with me on a date after work next day. I thought she'd said yes and so I told my room mate that I wouldn't be coming home as I had a date after work. Then before going to shower and change I asked her where she'd like to go and she snapped back that she wouldn't go anywhere with me. I then decided to go to a movie by myself rather than go home. One movie house was showing the Brigitte Bardot film God Created Woman but as I'd already seen it I kept on walking. However the film's title inspired me to make up a blues, the first and last sections - words and music together, in my head. When I got home that night my room mate seemed to know that my date hadn't come off and he was most sympathetic and understanding. Next day when on my own after work I played the song on my mandolin, wrote it down and made up the central verse. 5 years later I became friends with an office worker while working as baker at a summer resort. She had originally come from Scotland as I had too. We went steady after our first date on St Andrews day that year; we became engaged the following St Valentine's day and were married in May of that year. Thereafter I regularly thanked the Lord for the woman that he had given me.
Lyrics
And God looked down upon the man he had created And saw that he was so sad and lonely. Oh God, look down upon me for I am lonely too? Said the Lord: “It is not good that man should be alone” Yet here am I without a mate And it is surely not good that I be alone. And so the Lord created woman. O Lord, create a woman for me. Yes the Lord created woman. O God, in your great love and mercy, please, Find me a mate, a special woman for me. I am a weary wanderer day by day Without a mate or loved one near me. No-one to walk beside me on life’s way; No-one to comfort me or cheer me. Throughout the day: the dusty road ahead, The punishing sun beats down above me. And when, at night, I’m in my lonely bed, No-one to hold me close and love me. If we believe that there’s in store a fate And whether for bird or beast or human If there is meant for ev’ry one a mate, Why can’t I meet my special woman? In the beginning, God created both male and female And for this purpose man leaves his mother and cleaves to his wife. But God, where is the wife? The one that’s meant for me? “And they shall be no more twain, But shall become one flesh.” Where is the one, that special one for me that’s destined to be my other half? And then the Lord created woman. O God, create a woman for me. Oh yes, the Lord created woman. O God, in your great love and mercy, please! Where is the one - that special woman - for me?
