Paper Cats is a lover's duo. We range through folk and anti-folk to rougher electrified rock and blues; Chris plays guitars--six string, twelve string, classical acoustic, electric, you name it--and Lauren mostly sings. Some of our work is Chris's solo guitar composition, some Lauren's solo ballads, but increasingly our work is collaborative, usually with Chris writing guitar parts and Lauren writing vocal parts. We are enjoying ourselves immensely.

Story behind the song
We wrote this for the three-year anniversary of moving out of our former households and in with one another. This song reflects our struggle for independence from those lives and for our unity, our passion, and the triumph of still being madly in love with one another, years later. On the locations mentioned. . . Buttonwillow is the town with the cutest name in the history of towns. The marsh (in this case, the San Luis Bird Preserve) is a good place for getting spider bites. Mojave is a very good place to burn.
Lyrics
You brought me Revolver, we rolled in the grass Broke your lip with my teeth while you clung to my ass On a Buttonwillow hillside, burning right through our clothes We fought for a more perfect union, you know And on the 5th of July, we made it free I crashed into your arms for a new unity We met in Mojave with stone-fruit and wine Called to lie to our wives for the almost-last time We hanged out the flags, declaring our war In a big motel bed on the second floor And on the 5th of July, we made it burn Watched our old lives go up, left to never return Found hitchhiking bugs on my skin with the grime When we banged the drums on the Marsh, one last time Before you moved out and I drove away To meet up for good on our Independence Day On the 5th of July, we made it home Away from it all, to a place of our own And on the 5th of July, we made it free In our little apartment, you collided with me We went up like rockets, exploded in love And we're written there, still, on the sky-roof above Since our Independence Day. Ever since Independence Day.
