Story behind the song
Education is vitally important to democracy: if people are to rule themselves, then they must have access to accurate information and must have the ability to think critically when weighing up various ideas and situations. The educational system as it is currently arranged is little more than a sham which teaches what to think but not how to think. It is stifling a hell of a lot of potential and in my view is little more than a form of social control. It should (and with a change of emphasis, easily could) be fostering critical and creative thought with a view to producing with each successive generation, greater independence and personal responsibility.
