"The Old Silk Gloves"
(Howard Graves)
The old silk gloves are lying on the table
no one really wears them anymore
she dusts them off when she's able
probably several times a day
they were there when she moved in
she saw them when she first walked in the door
they haven't seen the light of day since 1964
dust now settles on the old silk gloves
dust now settles on the old silk gloves
Every night she turns a light on quietly
one light shining on the old silk gloves
she wonders about the woman who wore them
and how she spent her evenings long ago
did she go to all the fancy restaurants
or did she stay at home and make believe?
was her poor heart broken back in 1953?
dust now settles.......
Then one night as she sat and wondered
she said,"I think it's time to make them mine."
She watched her fingers slide into the darkness
of the whiteness of the old silk gloves
she didn't go to all the fancy restaurants
she stayed at home and made believe
that her poor heart wasn't broken back in 1983
Dust now settles...
