Lyrics
When Spartacus and friends defied the might of Rome,
The Empire’s generals showed them little mercy.
Yet though the slaves were beaten, their ideals were to live on,
And history would not forget their leader.
Yet who but historians remember the name
Of the generals who led those troops to victory?
Those fighting for the future we remember them yet,
Those blocking its path we speedily forget.
When Winstanley and the Diggers tried to build an ideal world.
The landlords sent their hired thugs to beat them.
But the Leveller’s ideals inspired many more to come,
Their example making it harder to defeat them.
From Tom Paine to Rosa Luxemburg, from Bela Kun to Che,
Heroes rose to dream things could be different,
Those fighting for the future we remember them yet,
Those blocking its path we speedily forget.
When the sun goes down, or in our darkest hour,
When our dreams appear to be condemned.
When all seems lost our thoughts will turn,
To those who went for before us.
That’s when we’ll remember them.
A nation mourns its martyrs like Connolly & Pearce
But who remembers those who once condemned them?
The men who manned the firing squads, the goons on the camp gates,
Reduced to some historical detritus.
Those who stood their ground against tyranny and hate,
We honour them today in admiration.
Those fighting for the future we remember them yet,
Those blocking its path we speedily forget.
