Well the verdict is in, and the country on the whole has lost. From start to finish, another special counsel puts one in the books for the American taxpayer, spending one million after another, because of a fib. Of course, lying to a Grand Jury not only isn’t the smartest thing to do, it’s also apparently an expensive one.
Today, Lewis Scooter Libby was found guilty on 4 of 5 counts pertaining to the investigation of CIA leak and the outing of an agent’s identity. But understand, Libby was not on trial for outing Valerie Plame’s identity, but for simple deceit.
While the traditional expense of court proceedings like this have remained under a few million, the real cost will not be known for years, well beyond Libby’s sentencing in June.
The point isn’t Libby, the point is someone somewhere knows the truth, and he is your elected official. At what price paradise does this administration make, when 90 millions dollars* have been spent over the last (2) presidencies, on special investigations, with nary a conviction in sight.
Whether Plame was high or low level, lives were placed in jeopardy, and the pain-staking gains made over several years flushed away for the sake of embarrassment.
Whether Plame was outed is not an issue, but “why” remains to be at the root of those 14 words that started this war.
There are so many un-answered questions in this administration, it makes the Bible look transparent look like A Dummies Guide to the Meaning of Life.
Where were the WMD’s? Where’s the 8 billion unaccounted-for dollars? Why is Haliburton everywhere there is money to be made, and Where is this 7 foot tall man with a beard you speak of?
Time is on the Bush administration’s side, because even if canaries start singing and the tale is told, it’ll be the year 2020, and Britain will be plunged into a Siberian climate, at least that’s what the Observer reported today.
In a decade that started with what is up is down, the irony is once again our nemesis. For a country that has been castigated for a Live for Today mentality, the reality is it’s a Live for Later government.
And by the time The Later Half peels back the layers of all the corrupt within this administration, we’ll be staring sheepishly at their faces on the next commemorative coin.
* Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's three-year CIA/Leak investigation has cost the tax-payer the least amount of any Justice Department probe by an Independent Counsel in history.
NBC News has learned, that since the start of Fitzgerald's investigation of the Valerie Plame leak, beginning in December 2003, the total cost to be reported to the GAO is about $1.5 million.
By contrast, the decade-long probe of former Clinton Housing Secretary Henry Cisneros by Independent Counsel David Barrett, cost about $23 million.
Fitzgerald's office has incurred only about $400 thousand in total expenses above the salary and benefits for the personnel working for him.
The Ken Starr investigation of Clinton 6.2, and Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky cost the tax-payer $64 million
