Story behind the song
*This song is about a mine disaster in West Virginia(US) where a dozen coal minors died. The family members were all told that their loved ones were still alive. Just to find out later that all but one had perished. The “newsman” in the song is a well known cable news “personality” (clown) who asked a family member…”Why did he want to become a coal miner”? And to her credit, she replied…”There’s not a lot of choice in West Virginia”!
Lyrics
Don’t believe the man when he tells you Everything will be alright You knew it all when he began He was just, being polite The camera lights are on now Time to tell your story Going to show the world how To praise god, in all his glory (chorus) Deep In The Ground We all could use some good news Deep In The Ground We don’t want to be confused It’s 2 am, time to set the record straight I am what I am, time to begin the hate Newsman asks “Why’d he do it”? and “Shouldn’t you rejoice”? “There’s no glory in a bottom-less pit” And “He had no other choice” (chorus)) Deep In The Ground We’re all here to amuse Deep In The Ground We have nothing left to choose
