Story behind the song
One of my favorite things to do as a song writer is to put myself in the shoes of different Bible character's and try to relate to the situation and what they might have been thinking. In this particular case, I was thinking about the soldier at the cross scene who took the days events in and then stood there at the end and claimed, " Surely this was a righteous man". This song shows his change of heart as he comes face to face with the living king.
Lyrics
More Than A King By Lonnie Crampsey I'm quick to criticize As I stand beneath this man whose just hanging there The mockers patronize You can see their anger shining through hateful stares But me I'll just keep my mouth shut and just do my job A soldier’s work is never done, hope this day won't be too long I won't allow myself to feel And I won't shed a single tear Cause the burdens more then I can bare That he actually might be a king he actually might be a king We start to drawing straws So we can stake our claim to riches he never had The rumbling skies grow dark Am I soon to be a target of a god that's mad? Could he really be the man that he claimed to be? will his blood stained on my hands always be reminding me? I can't allow myself to feel I can't shed a single tear The thought of it is more then I can bare That he actually might be a king That he actually might be my king When He cried out to heaven for help And his gaze pierced through my very soul Then He asked for forgiveness for all Saying, “Father they just didn't know” Oh God I just didn't know So I'll allow myself to feel And I'll shed a million tears And in his death and life I 'll share And I know that He's more than a king I know that He's more than a king I know He's my God and my King
