Lyrics
This month, Americans are licking their wounds from an unprecedented gas price hike, with every gallon of gas siphoning a little bit of my kids college fund. Last month, Alaska celebrated 17 years oil-sobriety since the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil along the Alaska coast in one of the country’s worst environmental disasters, and a jury’s $5 billion judgment against the company is still tied up in the courts, with Exxon asking it be erased. Even NINE hours after the ship ran aground Capt Joe Hazelwood’s blood alcohol level was STILL too high to operate a 986 foot TANKER…but boy could he handle a radio. Listen to his disingenuous distress call after the ship ran aground that night. [audio: Hazelwood] It almost reminds me of another Oil Worker detached from the harm his actions have caused: [audio: Lee Raymond] That’s Lee Raymond, the former CEO of Exxon explaining that the tax breaks given to Exxon, are really nothing to sneeze about. Then again neither is his $00 million dollar going away present either. Except, he’s right, if not painfully so; you see we import nearly 58% of all petroleum, yet only 45% of each barrel is used to produce gas, with less than HALF OF THAT used for everyday vehicles. The rest? The rest goes to Industry: shipping, machinery, farms, petrochemicals, jet fuel, asphalt, and even propane. The majority of each barrel goes to produce the synthetic fiber used in textile mills that make carpeting and fabric from nylon & polyester, synthetic rubber, plastics, detergent, deodorant, fertilizer, pesticides, paint, heart valves, crayons, buble gum, and yes, Vaseline. ALL from OIL. How ‘d this happen? Well, You see, 200 years ago, Professor Thomas Southcliffe Ashton called it The Industrial Revolution, but it wasn’t really kno wn what its Long Term affects would be…that IS until now.
