Story behind the song
There was a little girl who became like part of our family. When we first met her, she called everybody “mommy.” The rest of the song was inspired by a grown woman I know, Sandra, whose mother abandoned her father, leaving him to raise her sister and her on his own.
Lyrics

WHEN WILL MAMA COME HOME?:

© 1996, 1997 by Lydia Glider-Shelley
Verse 1:
She called everybody mommy, everywhere she’d go:
But her hopes for a real one were shot down so long ago… Chorus:
When she was little she said,
“ Oh daddy, when will mama come home?”
And he said, “Child, I don’t know, child I don’t know:
If she ever will, child, I don’t know…” Verse 2:
She wants everyone to hug her and kiss her, ‘cause
That’s what she figures a mother does,
And even though she’s never got her wish:
She’s never stopped hoping mom would turn up again… Bridge 1:
Now she’s older and wiser, but still those dreams remain… And it even seems like Climb 1:
Sometimes when she’s in a public place,
She’s caught a glimpse of that long – lost face!
(repeat chorus)
Verse 3:
So if you are the mother that she never knew:
Leaving her behind to wonder about you…
Pull that faded photo from your wallet once more,
And relive the pain of walking out that door…
Bridge 2:
And if you could see her, don’t worry what you’d say:
‘ Cause she’s just like you, and Climb 2:
Sometimes when you’re in a public place,
You catch a glimpse of that long – lost face!
(repeat chorus)
tag: She called everybody mommy.
