No Band but Sonar 5
No band but Sonar 5
Story behind the song
I started writing this as a Classical Flute piece. But after my daughter heard it, she said “What is that? Jazz?” with that sour tone kids reserve for their parents. But she was right so I changed the Flute to a Soprano Sax. I wrote this as a two time piece (6/8 over 4/4) but Sonar 5 can only handle 1 time signature. So I settled for 15/8 for the first part. That way I’m able to give the illusion of triples over 4/4 time (dotted quarter notes) and still have the freedom of many different time changes.
The first part I wrote as atonal only in the fact that I’m too lazy to analyze it, so it has no key. The second part is Emaj but in a mode close to Mid-eastern, at least I hope it is, in ¾ time. Also I tried to give the drums in the second part the feel as if someone is holding the drum in one hand and playing with one drum stick. The part I like the most is the Stand-up Bass. I have heard Electric Guitarist use an Octave doubter which puts a bass on what they are playing. This is the effect I was going for but it turned into almost a duet in the fact that the Soprano Sax needs the Bass to complete the phrasing. The piano part is added for effect, just clusters of notes around what the Sax is playing. This is my first piece I ever wrote with a beginning and an end.
