I wrote this song in 1993 when I visited the Netherlands with my wife. She was pregnant and glowing, and I kind of basked in that glow. I lost the song after getting back, and only found it in an old notebook a few weeks ago.

Story behind the song
I wrote this song in 1993 when I visited the Netherlands with my wife. She was pregnant and glowing, and I kind of basked in that glow. I lost the song after getting back, and only found it in an old notebook a few weeks ago. The verses are just little vignettes of things that happened in Amsterdam and Den Helder. The chorus popped into my head one evening at dusk when the sun had just set, and venus had become visible.
Lyrics
She strolls beside the waterway Turning tourist heads her way A passing glance from Uncle Sam In the soft red lights of Amsterdam Sitting in a little coffee shop Where the espresso's cold and the weed is hot, She stares up at the passing feet, The mercedes, cyclists on the narrow street She smiles that Mona Lisa smile That made my life worthwhile She is the shimmering star; I am the world from afar. How can I tell her I know It's almost time now to go? She is the setting sun, I am the fortunate one. How could she ever have known? I carved this moment in stone. She shakes her head and wonders why I'm chasing pigeons, so I can watch them fly. A knowing look from a Dutch girl's eye Reminds me why I'm here tonight. She sighs that Rembrandt sigh And lights up the Holland sky. She is the shimmering star; I am the world from afar. How can I tell her I know It's almost time now to go? She is the setting sun, I am the fortunate one. How could she ever have known? I carved this moment in stone.
