Story behind the song
I lived on a mission compound in the bush in Zambia for six years. The night sky was absolutely stunning...on a moonless night there were more stars than you could imagine...you could almost read by starlight!! And a the dam that supplied water for the mission about a half-mile away was home to so many frogs that were so loud many of the locals complained that it kept them awake at night. Personally, I loved it...rhythmic and throbbing, I thought it was a great thing to fall asleep to. And often there were the sounds of drums from celebrations, both Christian and traditional, from the surrounding villages. These are heart-warming memories of my years in Africa and I summarize them in this song.
Lyrics
The sky is moonless You’d never believe the stars And through the trees I see the Southern Cross And a million points of light Across the African sky It takes my breath away Takes my breath away And hear the bullfrogs You’d never believe your ears They fill the darkness Like nothing you’ve ever heard With distant drums they echo Throughout the starry night It takes my breath away Takes my breath away The sky is moonless Here in my native land Where is the starlight That filled the African skies I can’t see the stars For all the city lights And I can’t hear the bullfrogs tonight
