Good music for good people
This is a collaborative project involving anybody who wants to be a part of manipulating, transforming, building on, or subverting Jad Fair 1 2 and 3.
Story behind the song
I looped "Jad Fair 3" and just built on the patterns and sounds I heard. While the tape was still in the hands of the people at the University who made me a good digital copy, worked over a copy I had made before... I just played it tails out as he had loaded it, at 7.5 ips. I digitally reversed the recording, reduced the length by half and raised it one octave (to put it at the speed and pitch that it would be at if I could play it back at the correct speed).
I decided to not worry about the noise, in fact, I piled more on... surface noise from an old record, etc. The lyrics were inspired by the somewhat depressing process of going through boxes of stuff, (which turned up the tape, but also a lot of other stuff old, dirty, torn, stained... a lot of noise on the recording seemed to fit.
I packed a lot of stuff on it, but I think I left room to put on some bass, keyboard, more guitar, percussion, vocals. (or not - it sounds prety dense to me now - but if anybody comes up with anything, more lyrics, an instrumental part, I'll make room for it!)
Lyrics
Going through the boxes
Full of memories of my life
Artifacts of childhood
photos of my former wife
The college I attended
And the jobs that I couldn't stand
Everything I fucked up
And all the shitty bands
Chorus
The past is like an octopus
That's got a hold on me
Dragging me beneath the waves
In the sea of memories
All the projects that I started on
And scrapped before their done
The toys I bought, then boxed up
Because they weren't much fun
Presents from my parents
Letters from my friends
Clippings from newspapers
Lead pencils and ink pens
