Story behind the song
I heard a minister tell a story about a guy driving down a dark road who prayed for companionship on the long trip. Not far ahead he saw a hitchhiker and picked him up. They talked and eventually stopped for coffee. After he left he realized he hadn't gotten the guy's name, so he went back to the diner. The waitress said he had been alone the whole time. She wondered why he had ordered two coffees...
Lyrics
VERSE All alone on this road I had chosen And somehow lost my way Made a stop in for one cup of coffee Down at Caroline's Cafe. A corner booth and the local paper Soon a voice said, "Excuse me, mister, I was thinkin' you might need a friend." We talked a while with a couple of breaks I told him about all my mistakes He just smiled and said, "Friend, lay them down." CHORUS Lay them down Lay them down LAy them down at the feet of Jesus Give them all Great and small Give them all to the One who freed us. Friend, the price He paid was for all of us And one thing you should know That the blood He shed upon the cross Has washed us white as snow There's no need for you to carry All your pain and doubt Just take them to the cross And lay them down. INSTRUMENTAL CHORUS VERSE We said goodbye and I hit the door Then I thougHt about him a little more But when I asked the waitress Where my friend had gone She just stopped and said, "Sir, you sat alone." As I turned away, I know I heard an angel say... CHORUS
