Story behind the song
My interest in recording this song stems from the fact that the Spanish conquest of Mexico was made easier by the fact that the Aztecs were expecting their deity, Quetzalcoatal, to soon return bringing a new religion. Therefore, Montezuma hesitated in opposing Cortez and in fact, invited him and his troops into his capitol city, Tenochtitlan. The fact that Cortez wasn't literally Quetzalcoatal made no difference regarding the historical outcome. A superior power arrived bringing a new religion, and so it can be said that Cortez was, for all intents and purposes, the fulfillment of that Aztec prophecy. No doubt, other religious prophecies can be fulfilled in that same figurative manner, and yet engender the same kind of intended material consequences. The Rudyard Kipling book and subsequent movie, "The Man Who Would Be King" explores this same theme.
