Story behind the song
*WARNING*
If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you.
Or both can exist. It’s all really subjective. Proceed with understanding.
Thank you,

The Official Backstory
This is a song about Jade.
In the year 2000, Jade and I had a chance at getting back together. We spent the entire year together up until the fall. We went through a lot, and were inseparable. We travelled through Annapolis Valley. We went through a Sweet Grass Ceremony. We went to crazy parties at "And" Cafe. We went to crazy parties at various friends places. Everyone acted like we were a couple again, as if we hadn't missed a heartbeat - and I was OK with that even though we we're not official.
I remember getting the first phone call and driving out, getting out of the car - and our eyes instantly just locked for about ten minutes. That was the catch up from the last few years. Not that the heart of things wasn't felt along the way. Just the sense of time lost between having had the chance to lock eyes like that.
The line "Amazing how we pass the time" was meant in the context of how it was amazing me even managed to pass it without each other - yet somehow the time had managed to pass.
This song is primarily about Jade and I running through that summer aimlessly, whereever we may end up that night, no real plan - but always the best time.
One of my favorite nights that summer was when Tobin turned "And" Cafe temporarily into an art exhibit space. A Conte drawing I had made of Jade was on displapy, and we had dressed up all elegantly for the night that night. I was a lot of fun, and one of the most memorable nights - not necessarily because of the circumstance of the night. It was because I remember so clearly the look in Jade's eye looking at the piece I made waking up seeing it for the first time, and how genuinely recreated that same expression was seeing the piece garner a lot of praise at the gallery showing. You need to be so inherently genuine to have that particular kind of consistency.

You And Me (Lost And Alone In The City)

With silence lost inside you mind
Amazing how we pass the time
For everything I forgot to say
It would not matter anyway
‘Cause it was felt and it was known
‘Cause it was understood as home
Where ever you may roam
Sweet kindred soul alone
Take my hand let’s enjoy this weekend
– You and I lost and alone in the city
Find a party with a lot of good friends
– You and I all dolled up looking pretty
I’m OK with how they all pretend
– You and I lost or alone was a pity
Like old times I am still your girlfriend
– You and I lost and alone in the city
Speak not to me of chances
Speak not to me of love
Speak not to me of circumstance
Nor any aspect of
Speak not to me in circles
Speak not to me in rhyme
Speak not to me of waiting
You obviously don’t have time
Speak not to me romantically
Speak not to me of lust
Speak not to me of imagery
My heart no longer trusts
Speak not to me of regrets
Speak not to me of ends
Speak not to me as lover
If your heart is saying friends
Take my hand let’s enjoy this weekend
– You and I lost and alone in the city
Find a party with a lot of good friends
– You and I all dolled up looking pretty
I’m OK with how they all pretend
– You and I lost or alone was a pity
Like old times I am still your girlfriend
– You and I lost and alone in the city
