Story behind the song
*WARNING*
If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you.
Or both can exist. It’s all really subjective. Proceed with understanding.
Thank you,

Musical Conception
This was a song originally conceived with Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) singing the libretto over guitars that right out of a live Neil Young & Crazy Horse album – but I think I got the guitar tone covered.
The Official Backstory
This is a song about Jade.
We had been apart physically for years and in 2000 had an opportunity to get back together. Though the love that existed before still survived, Jade also had a love for another. In the end, I wanted all of Jade, not half of Jade. I had hoped that if they had the opportunity to explore and re-evaluate that other relationship, that Jade would be back and stronger than possible under any other circumstance.
I had no idea it wasn’t going to work out that way at the time that this song was written.
At the time that this song was written we were still hanging out, inseparable. There was very little of 2000 we hadn’t spent together up until the fall. Some people have this period where they really admire someone, and that phase sunsets. I don’t feel we had that sunset – certainly not by 2000 after more than half a decade. Sometimes I would feel like I had to make an effort to snap out of it and still be heard because it felt good feeling in awe of someone that spent that feeling back into you.
And when that dynamic is missing, reflecting on it can also cut at the same time.

The sky parts just before her lips
Her words hang in the air
A chill as my thoughts are eclipsed
By a warmth from her stare
Time
Just
Stands
Still
I'm fighting to be there
Could it be better if some things had just never been
Cast in shadows
Cast in shadows
Memory makes the cut in me
While I am
Cast in shadows
Sometimes oceans lay between us
As I run my hands through your hair
Just memories like phantoms with a vengeance
Smother me unless they see how you care
Time
Just
Stands
Still
Tell me "Be strong and bear"
Easy for you to say, I don't know where to begin
Cast in shadows
Cast in shadows
Memory makes the cut in me
While I am
Cast in shadows
*solo*
But I keep on fighting
Like my minds hit by lightning
Here I am
Cast in shadows
Cast in shadows
Memory makes the cut in me
While I am
Cast in shadows
