Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
Bhutan is a beautiful, peaceful country dotted with astounding Dzongs (fortified monasteries/administrative centres) - but also full of stray dogs. These are well-treated and well-fed by the locals (being Buddhists). Unfortunately they repay this kindness by running wild at night and barking their heads off. In Thimpu we had a pack which assembled under our window for a good sing-song every hour or so throughout the night! This seems to be an issue across the region, through Sikkim to Nepal... and also across in Myanmar.
Lyrics
Just a Dzong… E B7 E Just a Dzong at twighlight, several centuries old G# C#m F# B In the fading sunlight, silver bourne of gold.. E B7 E Though you're feeling sleepy soon the dogs will wake E A Bark on through the night-time E F#m E A E B7 E Make your head ache, make your head ache Sleeping Dogs… E They say let sleeping dogs lie, but I say no! B They say let sleeping dogs lie, but I say make ‘em get up and go A ‘cos if you let ‘em sleep all day A7 They're gonna wake up and bark the night away B E You may be a sucker for the pups but I say wake ‘em up! Too many dogs running free I think they've got a problem with excessive fertility They're gonna need a helping hand From some kind of canine Celia Hammond It may just be a demographic blip but I say give ‘em the snip Wake ‘em up, you gotta wake ‘em up Don't let those hound dogs lie, you gotta wake ‘em up ‘cos if you let ‘em sleep all day They're gonna wake up and bark the night away You may be a sucker for the pups but I say wake ‘em up! Repeat 1
