Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
I wrote this at Mrauk-U, in the middle of nowhere in north-west Myanmar, after we'd got back from a long jeep/boat trip to a Chin village in the Hills, far from any of the services we take for granted. There's a youtube video to go with it, including images from villages across Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. http://youtu.be/_2OUBiGNmEU This is a track off of my most recent CD, Sleeping Dogs. The rest of the tracks will follow soon.
Lyrics
Village days, E Pigs and chickens kicking dust up in the yard A Don’t believe that life is easy life is hard Am2 E In many ways, Village days B7 E Riverside E You can watch the sails unfurling in the breeze A Or the raftsmen on the bamboo take their ease Am2 E On the ride, riverside B7 E You can watch the water running on a pleasant winter’s day C#m G#m F#m E But when the floods are coming they can wash your dreams away C#m G#m F#m B Plant your rice Watch it flourish in a burst of emerald green All the bounty of the earth is plainly seen Neath azure skies above your rice Keep your grin When the burning heat of summer takes its toll Turn the versdant fields of plenty to dust bowl Take it on the chin and keep your grin Village life Though it’s kind of hard to make it through some days Still you keep a cheery smile upon your face Through the strife of village life
