Story behind the song
Written in 1972 after a friend named Johnny Voo died suddenly and tragically. Johnny loved early rock n roll and doo-wop.
Lyrics
CHORUS:
Oo, Johnny Voo's convertible is blue,
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
You, Johnny Voo, you coulda been King of the Casual Crew,
But, but, but,
You, Johnny Voo, were too warm to ever be cool.
1
That Rocky Raccoon ain't got nothin’ on you;
Buddy Holly and the Crickets always reign.
Left a couple of kids broken up by it all
And the rest of us with feelings mislaid
CHORUS
2
The dirty T-shirt; it wasn't sayin anything,
his dark-blue suit just wanted fame.
There's danger in the curtains,there's a fight in every wing;
His beard was too good-looking for the grave.
CHORUS
3
They say he never had much subtlety; let's not underestimate;
I haven't yet said nothin' 'bout no saint.
I don't like thinkin about death, but I got something on my chest;
Whoa, Johnny, you're just driving me insane.
Who put the bomp in the bomp-she-bomp-she-bomp?
Who put ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong?
Who was that man?
I’d like to shake his hand;
He made my babyfall in love with me.
Go, Johnny, go, go, won't you tell me it isn't so?
