Story behind the song
Had a small epiphany into how much self-discipline it takes to break out of normalcy. I think the first couple of lines of verse 1 came from the first "Rocky" movie ... when he first started his pre-fight regimen ... got woke up early by his alarm, then drank a raw egg.
Lyrics
(v.1) A champion knows how much he’ll eat before he takes his first bite. A champion knows how much he’ll sleep before he turns out the light. And if he breaks his own training he won’t let himself stay down. In the time it takes to think one thought he’s picked himself up off the ground. (c.1) WIACMO? He has mastery over his flesh. WIACMO? He won’t let guilt steal his best. (v.2) A champion keeps looking forward he keeps his thoughts on track. The past doesn’t have a prayer of making him look back. A champion won’t accept limits there’s always more beyond the top. The only time he’ll use the word can’t is to say, “I can’t be stopped!” (c.2) WIACMO? He has a goal and keeps moving on, WIACMO? Yet he knows a goal is just a stepping stone. (v.3) A champion knows deep inside he’s not doing it all on his own. He’s just making use of principles that a loving God has made known. The champion does not falter at things the devil tries. In fact that's often when the fire comes to his eyes. (c.3) WIACMO? He’s humble toward Someone higher. WIACMO? To him a challenge just ignites a fire. That’s what a champion’s made of.
