Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
This was a popular club song, built around the odd open tuning that gave the break between verses its ringing quality, and filled out by Ralph Simpson’s flute. I can remember playing it at our annual ‘Varsity match’ with the Oxford university folk club. There is a digital recording on 'The Album that Never Was' where I tried to make up for the lack of flute with a ‘live’ electric organ part… This recently discovered analogue version recorded in the 1970s seems to be a straight take, but sadly has no flute!
Lyrics
Morning dew satin lies everywhere Sparkles and shimmers like the rain on her hair Blackbirds and ravens take to the air Not to return till we’re no longer there Buildings of green moss-covered stone Waiting to see if the light that she owns Shines only for me Small conversation soothing and low Floats on the fragrance of the flowers below Walking the meadows easy and slow Nothing to do and no one to know The sunshine appears and we stop for a while And relive the years and I know that her smile Is only only for me Patterns in sunbeams jostle around Fighting to stay in the light that they’ve found Patches of comfort spread on the ground The warm grass is singing a murmuring sound The moment is free empty of care And the feelings that she has to share Are only for me
