Story behind the song
Long ago, in college, I was the singer for a rock band. We weren’t too good and I wasn’t much of a rhythm guitar player, then or now. But I can dream: what if an old rocker found Christ?
Lyrics
He Could Drive That Nail
We heard he didn’t pick much any more
just now and then a lick or two, or a couple of minor chords.
But we knew he could make it wail
we knew if he let ‘er rip, he could drive that nail.
But now the nail’s in Jesus’ hands
The old gang packed the van up and drove down to hear him play
we heard he was doin’ a one man show on the north side of LA.
The crowd had gathered round him by the time we had arrived.
He was singin’ and playin’ soft and low, but the whole crowd was alive.
They had come to hear him wail
they knew if he let ‘er rip, he could drive that nail.
But now the nail’s in Jesus’ hands
He played a pure sweet melody, and the words were clear and strong
he sang about raisin’ families, and teachin’ right from wrong.
Then he sang about a world gone bad, with cheatin’, hate and lies.
You could hear the hurtin’ in his voice, as tears came to his eyes.
Then he began to make it wail
as he told that sad, sad story, they heard him drive that nail.
And now the nail’s in Jesus’ hands
He said since I’ve come to know the Lord, you should understand:
the songs I play belong to Him, and this nail’s in Jesus hands.
Then, once again, he made it wail
as he raised his eyes to heaven, they heard him drive that nail.
And now the nail’s in Jesus’ hands
now the nail’s in Jesus’ hands.
Yes, the nail’s in Jesus’ hands.
