Cosmos II is the pseudonym of Alan Marscher, a professor of astronomy at Boston University. Usually, he performs alone on guitar and vocals. The songs are all originals composed and copyrighted by Marscher. Some are "science nerd" songs that Cosmos II performs to science students at B.U. The majority, though, are just general songs about life, love, the pursuit of happiness and meaning, and various other random topics. Most of the songs are in English, while some are in Russian, the country where Marscher's wife, Svetlana hails from. The style is a mixture of rock, pop, and folk - what is often termed "adult contemporary." Many are humorous - e.g., "Medical Miracle" about how Viagra has revitalized a lot of middle-aged men or "Relatively Weird" about the wonders and perils of traveling around at near-light speeds. Others are philosophical, such as "All from Nothing?" about how the universe came to exist and "Elusive Truth" that asks whether absolute truth can exist. Some are just plain love songs - an example is "Together or Apart" - and others are love-is-difficult songs, like "Winter's Darkness." Laughs and tears for everyone! Marscher recorded all of the songs himself on a small digital recorder. He doesn't have loads of free time, so he hasn't worked hard enough to remove imperfections, add a drum pattern, etc. But most songs have harmony and are at least at the "demo" level of quality. Friends who have listened to them have neither gone mad nor rushed the CD to the local recycling center. More importantly to Cosmos II, Marscher can listen to them without wretching in horror over the slight mis-timings of the different tracks and other imperfections.

Lyrics
1. The rain in his heart doused the spark in his soul that had lit the creative fire He plunged from a cliff on the mountain of love as he attempted to climb higher His wings had melted from flying too close to the source of light in his life He lay in pieces on the rocky ground, dissected with Cupid’s knife And the music stopped. Inspiration met a sudden death. So the music stopped. Respiration became empty breath. The downward spiral of a spirit depressed Caused emotion and desire to be fully repressed And the music stopped. He could not revive the creative spark. So the music stopped. His soul was buried in a tomb cold and dark. 2. His flirtations with love would always come to a very unsatisfying end Each object of his desire informed him that she wants to remain merely a friend So he sat lonely on the sidelines as he watched singles become pairs Devastated by the knowledge that there is no one else who cares And the music stopped. The chairs were all filled before he had a chance. And the music stopped. He had no partner to join in the dance. His desire was strong, but the timing was wrong So he didn't belong with those singing love's song And the music stopped. He could not ignite a romantic spark So the music stopped. And his heart was becoming cold and dark Bridge: He finds it hard to sustain, yet harder still to refrain From the habit to entertain memories of emotional pain And it's difficult to explain the origin of the dark stain That permeated his soul and burned a gaping hole Through his heart, through his heart, and it split apart Then it fell and it fell into an abandoned well Deep, dark, and cold, anguish uncontrolled His soul condemned to stay, never seeing the light of day With the world unaware how he suffered in despair All the time knowing that she’d no longer care 3. Her desire had waned as the years passed by, she was too busy with her life She ignored his advances, his requests for dances, the romantic role of a wife So he found someone else to fulfill the needs of every healthy man She was taken by surprise, hadn't seen it in his eyes, this wasn't in her plan And the music stopped. Her chair was filled when she left the room And the music stopped. She had no partner when the dance resumed A feeling so strong had somehow gone all wrong It had been too long since she had listened to his love song So the music stopped. She had extinguished the romantic spark And the music stopped. She was left to weep alone in the dark Ending: She revives him with compassion, ignites his burning passion Her love fills him with elation, inspires him to creation And the music flows. It pours out from his deepest soul And the music flows. His divided heart is once again whole He breathes into each song a passion ultra-strong Together they belong in a kiss forever long So the music flows. She has revived the creative spark And the music flows. They make sweet love gently covered by the dark
