Story behind the song
This song is an English traditional Christmas carol. The melody is in Aeolian mode. It was published by William B. Sandys in 1833, although the author is unknown. Like so many early Christmas songs, this carol was written as a direct reaction to the music of the fifteenth century church. It is referred to in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, 1843: "...at the first sound of — 'God bless you, merry gentlemen! May nothing you dismay!'— Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the fog and even more congenial frost."
Lyrics
God rest ye merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Savior, Was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan's power, When we were gone astray; O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. In Bethlehem, in Israel,This blessed Babe was born And laid within a manger, Upon this blessed morn The which His Mother Mary, Did nothing take in scorn O tidings of comfort and joy,Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy From God our heavenly Father,A blessed angel came. And unto certain shepherds, Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born, The Son of God by name: O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. But when to Bethlehem they came, Where this infant lay They found him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; And his mother Mary, Unto the Lord did pray: O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.
