Soloist. Songwriter/singer. ASCAP member. A NICE WITNESS FOR CHRIST There is an extensive interview of me done by Scott Crawford, at . Do not let the site name alarm you. It is an "adult-themed music and entertainment" site. It is not a porn site, and you will not get tagged for spam if you go there. Scott is a journalist of integrity, who asked pertinent and penetrating questions, then printed my answers verbatim. Both God and His son received much attention in the interview. REVIEWS: "Fancy keyboard playing is the backdrop for this positive and upbeat collection. Hackley's vocals are reminiscent of Burl Ives." Review by Brent Castillo, The Wichita Eagle, March 5, 2005. "world's wimpiest Christian rocker". Brother Russell Podcast; : INFLUENCES (a very lengthy list, ending with...) "and of course, Richard Hackley." "Yet the songs on the Worst of the Worst can be compelling in their awfulness. Songs like Richard Hackley's rabble-rousing, hackles-raising spiritual God's Backhand ("We're not talking about tennis or Ping-Pong!") "; "Richard Hackley... HUGE musical influence. And a real bad mofo live.";

Story behind the song
I saw this title somewhere (I think on a paperback book, in a self-help section). It struck me as a great title for a song about the capabilities added to us by the new birth.
Lyrics
(v.1) The enemy called average, he’s busy all the time. Whispering to God’s people that average is just fine. But we’ve got holy spirit inside. We’re far above the norm, Where the world’s cream of the crop could only wish to perform. So take the world’s absolute best, increase it by a factor of ten, And you will start to get a small idea of what you have within. (v.2) Maybe our life has been just a face in the crowd. No real major accomplishments to make us forever proud. Or maybe at some point we did have our fifteen minutes of fame. We basked in the world’s attention, then it was gone as quickly as it came. So now with things all quiet again we settle back into our mold. Quietly doing our business, while quietly just growing old. (v.3) What’s wrong with this picture? It doesn’t describe Jesus Christ. It doesn't describe a single thing about God, nor should it describe our life. God did not call us to live ineffectively. And His son was not crucified so we could stay in mediocrity. What God did call us for is to show us our ministry, And then start teaching us the details so we can do it superbly. (v.4) The enemy called average, he’s busy everyday Whispering to God’s people that average is really okay. But we don’t serve an average God. We serve the best that there is. And we should hate the thought of offering anything average to Him. What we’ve got ourselves into is no ordinary family. And there is nothing to hold us back from being all God wants us to be.
