E.m.b.a.s. (eclectic music by a sextet) Like any story, this one is based on coincidence, or should I say fate One city, Caracas, Venezuela. In one hand, Leonardo Jenkins, a composer-guitarist-singer was seeking musicians to start a project, after a long time of playing by himself; Francisco Sapene was a bassist-composer with many experiences in the musical movement of Caracas. In November of 2001, this two musicians, carried by almost the same ideals, concurred, agreeing to give life to a project. Alexander Silva, an academic viola player was invited too. Daniel Moros and Carlos Rosales in the electric guitars and Ruyman Gilbert on drums, completed the list of musicians in this band, which soon would take E.m.b.a.s. as its own name; eclectic music by a sextet was the meaning of those five letters, and simply resumed the whole idea of these six people making eclectic music. With songs like “Blissful Light”, expressing the never-ending admiration from a man towards a woman, with musical arrangements made specifically to feed the spirit, and “Polluted demeanor”, a blend of soul and rock music, with aggressive yet subtle guitars, strings arrangements loaded with a symphonic feeling and a very intense set of vocals, expressing idleness and hope, E.m.b.a.s. shows a musical style very well defined and broad. Satisfaction had reached a point where the band was becoming an ideology to these six musicians, and in Genesis, their third musical piece, this ideal is expressed musically and lyrically, with strong influences from gipsy and oriental music. In june of 2002, E.m.b.a.s. debuted in public in the Festival Alma Mater Rock, making the finals and leaving a very good impression towards the judges. In that year, the band suffered two great losses, first Alexander Silva left the band, being substituted by Carlos Baez on the violin; in October, the band recorded a small demo tape with five of the songs, and they were soon distributed throughout the shows. Shortly after recording, the second substitution took place, an it was Daniel Moros who left the band; Miguelangel Maduro replaced him on guitars and brought along the keyboards In the beginning of 2003, E.m.b.a.s. have had two shows in “La Belle Epoque”, a well known bar for live bands in Caracas; then two shows in the Universidad Simon Bolivar, a Gatorade marathon and different bars and universities were constituting a path set by this six. With songs like “Arabesque”, “Contradicción” and “This magical place”, this band consolidates as well-balanced and intense in their performance, based upon individual eclecticism, creating an style “so unused and still so common” (Genesis)
