Bristol Hip Hop since 1999Band/artist history
Urban Fables is a Hip Hop collective from Bristol UK. It all started out when I produced a short e.p of old school shit just to prove I could back in 1999. I turned to hip hop to help me through dark days and better days and felt the unifying message of hip hop gave birth to a dream. I've always believed in my music and although trying to make it in a closed and cut throat business represents nothing less than a bad acid trip at times there has already been enough high points in my fledgling rap career to suggest to me I'm doing something right. My sound is still forming but I have had the privilege of learning from some of the best in Bristol music. The idea was in my head as early as 1997 when I was a member of the group G.L amour ,at this stage encouragement and advice was offered to us by Lloyd Harris who signed Massive Attacks first recording contract while running a small label from his shop Rubber Soul Records. The first time I became serious about doin hip hop was about the same time I met Daryl a.k.a D.j Device who started working at the same place as me. It was wicked to meet someone so motivated by the hip hop which until I met Daryl I didn't realize I knew so little about. Best of all Daryl knew in person just about everyone in U.K hip hop e.g Taskforce, Aspects, Jehst, d.j ideal etc .Picking his brains about further production techniques and about the U.K market helped tremendously in furthering my technique and sound. It also introduced me to the world of turntablism. With a mate of mine(4 inch) taking interest in my music at this time I was introduced to James a.k.a Kid Babylon of Output Records James spent a long time showing me even more production techniques and seeing the ex music journalist was been rated highly in the U.K music press at the time I listened intently. The next stage to all this was a debut performance from just myself at my old school Sir Bernard Lovell, I did 3 tracks which went out to a loud applause If I didn't know before I did then that I was onto something. Beats n Rhymes slowly then began to take shape through the year of 2002 and a rough non mastered copy was sent to the organizers of the huge Ashton Court Music festival which 100,000 people attend. I thought I had more chance of becoming prime minister than playing at this event but despite the organizers receiving a record amount of demos (over 300 for 30 places) I was chosen to open the Bristol Academy stage which was the second stage. It was after receiving this news that one of my younger Brothers Neal a.k.a M.C Nealster joined the project . The band then progressed to encompass more members. Urban Fables was beginning to take shape and become more than I had dreamed of ,this would be our debut performance together and many experienced bands (300 to be precise) were refused in favor of my shit. This gig went exceptionally well and saw debuts by the reputable D.J Sweete as turntablist (recommended to me by D.J Device) who has played at drum n bass events such as Hysteria and delirium as well as playing with Aspects and also released a successful hip hop record. Claire Curtis also joined on vocals. It also saw the addition of dancers Becci (My girl), Sue, Kate and Gemma who were choreographed by another Becky who's done shit like danced at the millennium dome.
Shortly after this shit a phone call was received to invite us to play at the fleece and firkin. We felt reluctant about this as we all thought they were just a bunch of rock star wannabes and unwashed characters. The promoter on the night also thought twice as our hip hop image slightly clashed with her 1960's hippy/New age traveler image. After some initial abuse we played out and our set went down very well with the said promoter offering us lots of contacts in the rock music world and setting up a interview with a magazine we wouldn't use to wipe our asses with. This gig also saw the debut of new rapper Nicky P.
After a break and serious rehearsal the next stage of the fable was about to unfold. We were accepted at Keynsham music festival which 10,000 people were expected to attend. However due to unforseen circumstances Claire and Nicky P dropped out. Luckily My girl Becci had been chattin to a couple of singers she knew and they agreed to step in. Esther and Helen in my view were a great success and learnt a hell of a lot of material in a short space of time. The show went brilliantly and people I didn't know were filming and taking pictures which I guess is a good sign.
Also recently the completion of a professional recording entitled "U.K Hip Hop" has been completed co-produced by D.J Sweete and D.J Mase. I hope this gets a chance as a single although only time will tell.
This journey has taken its toll on a few of the rookie members of the group but if you have read the story this far you would realize like me that its just another step on a very, very long climb to the top.Have you performed in front of an audience?See band biog.
