unknown2scientz is the synthesis of dense multi-syllabic wordplay with a haunting symphony of dark beats... Think Einstein fused with Dracula at a hip-hop Harvard course on rap activism...
Band/artist history
HISTORY
UNKNOWN2SCIENTZ rose like a phoenix out of the ashes of an east-end Toronto supergroup of freestylers that during high school years boasted a roster of eleven emcees. Dubb Club, a loose collective of talent with distinctive styles and voices, gained street fame all over eastern Scarborough, with members and spin-off groups reaching underground audiences throughout the GTA, Durham Region and even Montreal.
Ironically, it was at the pinnacle of the groups evolution into ready-for-prime-time players that a civil war erupted that divided the now seven-man clique along geographic linesthree residing in Durham Region, four living in east Scarborough.
Not content to give up dreams of exposing their talent to the masses, two of these three Durham residentsScientz and Unknowncemented their alliance and pledged to continue making music together.
unknown2scientz was born.
The first step for Scientz and Unknown was to create a separate identity from the Dubb family tradition their former allies had since high school. unknown2scientz, a forged corruption of both their names, was itself a play on their entire style and the way they planned to unleash their talents on an unwitting public. Unknown to science: something that had never happened before in recorded history.
Their next step was recording fresh material, which first occurred in the form of Vexed And Enragedan anger-themed symphony hauntingly conducted by Unknown and supplied with braggadocio rants from both of them. They followed this track with A Couple Of Wordz, another underground battle track featuring Eternia, the female protégé of MC Collizhun from Nefarius fame.
They began recording a few solo works to prove to an unwitting public they werent dependent on each other to carry a track, and the end result was June and Jessica, the former being Unknowns fictional tale of a love lost under tragic circumstances, the latter being Scientzs venomous rant against his own real life ex-girlfriend.
Their next step was to make their name known at a showValentines Day 2001 at Club Creme in Montreal. Their set was to open a pilot for a pay-per-view event called Battle Erotica, an adult event with hip-hop themed sex battles. It was well-received by the invitation-only crowd of potential investors and hip-hop headz, and the group returned to Toronto with eyes on bursting onto the hometown scene.
Their aim was to two-fold.
First and foremost, they wanted to edutain the people through their music. There was so much important knowledge that the school systems of today had failed to teach the children of the hip-hop generation that unknown2scientz were compelled to reduce this information to a readily digestible form and attempt to inspire an understanding of why the world is as it is. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, they had to catch the headz. If the real hip-hop headzthe ones that didnt follow the mainstream medias idea of what makes an emcee dopeif they gave their stamp of approval and paid attention then perhaps they could achieve the forum to deliver their message.
They grew quickly disillusioned by the amount of money and time that it takes to record, and so they built their own project studio. This was the beginning of their metamorphosis from unknown2scientza mere rap group; into Deprâvd Jenius Enterprisesan independent music label capable of not only producing and distributing the material of its founding artists, but capable of recognizing, recruiting and releasing local talent as well.
They were respected enough in their own neighbourhood to have the younger generation of emcees look up to them, and they began a forming a talent pool of skilled artists large enough to be in a position to introduce the world to a whole new voice: Canadian underground rap.
The Canadian representation in the major leagues of the American rap industry can be arguably divided into Kardinal Offishall, Choclair, Saukrates, and the Rascalzeach with their own somewhat talented friends and associates clamoring for media attention through their recognizable name. Therefore, the problem that arises for an emcee without connections to one of the aforementioned artists is that he or she rarely gets noticedregardless of skill.
This needs to change.
There is far too much undiscovered talent in Canada, and this needs to change as well.
Deprâvd Jenius aims to introduce the brightest lights of the Canadian underground scene, including themselves, wherein attempting a throwback to a rap music that educated followers and cut through fake media jargon to expose the worlds real truths. Perhaps once again, through this thing called hip-hop, the medium and the message can combine to deliver top-notch entertainment that causes the listener to think and wonder about what is connected to the loose strings society leaves perfectly visible in plain sight.
Hip-hop is evolving.
The world is changing at a frightening pace.
People are being kept ignorant of the truth.
The hip-hop generation can and will be educated, but someone must rise and teach. This is the climate in which unknown2scientz have chosen a most daunting task: To enter into the wide and diverse empire of rap music and speak of a truth relevant not only to one but to all. Moreover, to do this while maintaining vital street credibility, intense local following and a new, interesting and popular sound.
The stage has been set.
