Lyrics
I saw an old man the other day he was walking along the road way he was wearing an old overcoat it was torn and tattered, a dirty gray I wondered what his life was like did he have a family, did he have a wife as I slowly passed him by he looked at me and gave me such a smile It was a smile of joy it was a smile of a little boy you never know what lies within all the different shells, they hide both grace and sin I heard a woman in line today she was dripping in furs and diamond rings she was complainin' about some stuff apparently she didn't have enough I wondered where she had come from did she have a family, did she have someone then she turned and looked at me her eyes grew cold, her face it turned to steel It was a look of scorn it was a look a joyless life had born you never know what lies within all the different shells they hide both grace and sin I try to remember that what I see shouldn't make up my mind because a little conversation can be quite illuminating to what I'll really find I touched the hand of a child today she was kneeling in church, red curls bowed in prayer still as a statue in her sunday best white shiny shoes and a frilly dress I wondered why she looked so sad sitting there with her family, with her Mom and Dad then she reached her hand to mine and her eyes grew warm, and then she slowly smiled It was a smile of peace it was a smile that said I believe you never know what lies within all the different shells they hide both grace and sin All the different shells they hide both grace and sin
