Story behind the song
The title track of the Funky SNAFU album. I have used the term "funky SNAFU" for years to describe any type of predicament I've found myself in. One day I was contemplating the political situation in the country and realized that Funky SNAFU expressed exactly where we are, thanks to a bunch of jackasses in government. I needed something to rhyme with "funky" and of course, "monkey" came to mind. This led me to think about the politicians and corporate insiders as a bunch of monkeys running the zoo. The rest of the lyrics flowed naturally from this analogy. Musically, I had some tropic concepts that blended with funk, and after watching a Dave Matthews live concert I had inspiration for the break/jam. Listen carefully and you'll even hear a simple baritone saxophone working with the bass in that section.
