In the past I have played in a number of bands, on and off, as I was much more busy with being a mathematician. Primarily I used my own songs if I had the chance, and I composed some 300 songs all together since the seventies. Many of the earlier ones I wrote together with Richard van Bemmelen, with whom I also recorded many demos on an 8-track. The last decade I have been going solo, sometimes accompanied by Leo van Dorp, a flautist. I have decided to issue my first official CD in April 2006, the month in which I will turn fifty (shit). The CD's name therefore will be "Herbie's 50th blues", and a number of musicians will participate in its creation. Next months will be loaded with a lot of serious studio work. There will be a piece of Bach on church organ with fuzz guitar, a Schubert song and the other 14-ish will be my own.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, but opportunistically, mainly on invitation. Do I like it? Being on stage gives a kick.
Your musical influences
I am a musical omnivore. I am still enjoying the Beatles, Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Rembrandts, to name a only a few in the pop/rock scene but my main interest is now in Latin (eg Marissa Monte), Jazz (Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, the young Miles Davis and many more) and of course the serious classics (Beethoven, Richard Strauss, Bartok, Bach, Debussy, Mahler etc). Not really a fan of Mozart by the way although the oboe concerto and the clarinet concerto are divine.
What equipment do you use?
Instruments: various guitars, both acoustic and electric, plus saxophone and my voice (the human voice is the most diverse instrument). For other instruments I collaborate with other musicians (friends).
