TJ Scott is a classically trained soprano who grew up doing musical theatre. Although she doesn't limit herself to either of those things. Instead she chooses to use her knowledge of the voice to create soulful, angelic vocals to her diverse lyrics over pop/urban style productions. The versitility and range of this 23 year old voice has TJ holding comparisons to a variety of established artist's in every genre. She can sing anything and loves to mix up styles! With only 2 songs recorded TJ has already caught the attention of many indie record lables, talent agents, management companies, producers and song writers throughout the United States and Canada. She has won local vocal competitions, recieved awards for her dedication to her craft and in August '03 her song "I Never" was picked to accompany 11 other Unsigned Female Urban Artist's on a compilation CD to be sent to record label's all over. Maybe she doesn't have a full album yet, but this is one act you want to follow!
TJ Scott was born on January 29th in a small town in Colorado. As a child she loved to sing, act, and dance but was too shy to ever really do anything about it. Even so, her natural vocal ability was already apparent at the age of 7 scoring her many roles in church choir prodcutions. The first year she tried out traditional dance classes at the age of 9, she was honored with the Number 1 Dancer of the Year Award by her dance school and was asked to travel to Florida with her instructor for further training, declining because of her young age. She has been a part of a Messianic dance group since 1993, teaching lessons and performing at many messianic celebrations. She has also studied some modern, jazz, ballet, theatre movement, ballroom, and salsa dancing throughout the years, as well as assisted with the choreography for many theatrical productions.
Even though TJ's life has always been "musical", her love for singing and performing arts didn't completely surface until she was 15 and auditioned for her first musical. She was cast as chorus and everything exploded from there. She started voice lessons shortly after that production and as her voice and confidence blossomed, she began getting cast as lead roles. TJ add's with a laugh... " I had no business playing most of those roles at my age, but I certainly wasn't going to argue!". Life became musical theatre for her; she was having the time of her life at that point.
Naturally this recogniztion of talent sparked her interest in persuing performing arts further. After graduating from a small private school at age 17, putting previous plans of majoring in Equine Medicine with a minor in Journalism on hold, she started researching performing arts programs all over the world. She decided on the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City, auditioned and was accepted but her time there was short lived... "It wasn't what I was expecting at all. A few too many questionable occurances took place in such a short time, I didn't feel comfortable paying to stay there. It's a long story, but basically, I just wanted more structure for my education". After many discussions with her parents & loved ones she decided to withdrawal and go back home for the time being and start looking into other schools.
Since leaving AMDA TJ has performed in a few more musicals and plays, auditioned and been accepted to many Universities and Performing Arts schools around the country and abroad, but after a lot of soul searching, decided; school isn't where she wants to be right now. TJ notes: "I wanted to persue a solo singing career when I started writing lyrics and melodies that people were responding to in a really positive way. Realizing that I could write music specifically for my voice to sing, just the way I heard it in my head, was very liberating and exciting! Especially now. I am getting really "gutsy" with what I write about. I am really starting to express myself and my views in my songs. Musical theatre was different; I was always acting as if I were someone else, I liked that for awhile but now I am ready to get down to me, by using my talent(s) to show people who I am and what I stand for. To write and sing my own songs, fills me with a joy and sense of satisfaction that nothing ever has!"
TJ still has aspirations of a musical theatre career, when the time is right, but at this point in time she want's to concentrate on her music and hope that people want to hear it.
A few additional goals this ambitious 23 year old has her mind set on include: A record label or management company of sorts, that would be geared to help unsigned artist in a way that most labels don't today. "Somewhere in the middle of all that..." she adds "...I plan on getting married, having a family and maybe obtaining a degree or certificate in something pertaining to the industry". That doesn't really concern TJ at this point, though. "I have always excelled academically, but believe the world is my classroom... I have plenty of time to get a degree in anything, when I (hopefully) have the money to pay for it and the perspicacity for all that. I have a "perfect plan" in my head, I am just hoping it all goes my way eventually".
Currently, TJ is still working hard to finish her first album.
I have yet to perform my own material infront of a crowd, but I am no stranger to the stage & performing live!
The main influences in my music & writing are just life... Living & learning. People and experiences either I have had or someone close to me has had. But I am constantly being inspired/influenced by new and older artist's everyday!
