Tinnatus
Tinnatus consists mainly of me (the funny looking one in the picture), my computer, and sounds that come from many and varied sources.
I've never released an album, nor even shared much of my work publicly until now. I decided the only way to get better at what I do, is to let people listen to it, and get constructive feedback from people on how to improve.
I see music like I see life - It's a learning curve one never reaches the end of. That's what makes it so exciting and new every day.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I discovered the world of mixing several years ago, back when Rave E-Jay was released. I promptly began sending up the Club genres, and came up with several mixes, which I felt really made fun of club music. I'm not a club goer, and don't ever plan to become one. Initially, I held the narrow and very old-fashioned view that club music wasn't 'real' music, it was 'just noise'. I set out to ridicule it at every turn, using Rave E-Jay as my vehicle. Somewhere along the way, I discovered an enjoyment in mixing this type of music that I never would have expected. I also discovered from one or two people, to my surprise, that I might actually be reasonably good at it too. Realising what a snob I'd been, and was in danger of becoming the sort of person I hate, I went through a period of attitude adjustment.
OK, I probably will never set foot in a club, but I believe it's as valid an art form as any other type of music, and allows for just as much creativity and originality. The computer is indeed a musical instrument in its own right.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I don't play live. I'm not sure that would be possible.
Your musical influences
My tastes are pretty eclectic, ranging from folk to rock. I am partial to guitars, but also am a great lover of ethnic percussions and sounds. I'm not sure what kind of effect this diversity has on my music, but am aware that I am influenced from several directions.
Favourite artists/bands include: Kate Bush, Aerosmith, Mike Oldfield, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Vangelis, ACDC, ZZTop.
Basically, I'm influenced by anything, as long as it's brilliant...
What equipment do you use?
I use my computer for everything. I've got an Audigy Platinum soundcard, and use a range of E-Jay products. I also use Magix software, but mainly Music Maker 7 Deluxe. I have an Evolution Midi keyboard, and a large collection of freeware soundfonts. I use Cubasis VST and E-Jay Music director. Nothing massively expensive, but then, I'm not sure It's worth me investing hundreds of quids on the really expensive stuff just yet (if ever).
Anything else?
I'd choose cheese over chocolate any day.
