3 Steps is a "hardcore-influenced emo-rock" band from Port Washington, Wisconsin.
3 Steps actually started off with the name 3 Steps Backwards, and was only recently changed to 3 Steps. 3 Steps Backwards was started with Jordan Steffen on drums, Justin Spenner on bass, and Russ MacRae on lead guitar. Russ was later replaced by Josh Cleveland.
With Josh in the band the three guys created their first song, an instrumental now known as Blue Monkey. They then went on to create their first two songs with lyrics, Back to Earth and Long Gone. They got they're first real performing debut in their middle school gym at an assembly in which a spot was reserved for them to play a song. Unfortunately technical difficulties involving the microphone and feedback prevented them from finishing the song, but they had a great time performing for their school nonetheless.
They continued to crank out new songs for about a year, and even recorded their first album in Jordan's basement using his karaoke machine. Although the sound quality of this album was terrible, they sold some, and introduced others to their music.
They then decided to get a second guitarist, so they could be more creative with their guitar parts, and make the overall sound of the band more full. Steve Frame was the chosen man for the job. The four guys played one show together, but soon after that decided to remove Steve from the band. Steve was a cool guy, but they didn't feel that he was adding what they wanted to the sound.
The band then went on to record their second album in Jordan's Basement, this time using a computer and audio editing software. It came out sounding much better than their previous one.
After the release of their album, Justin decided to concentrate 100% on vocals and get a new bassist. They asked a friend of theirs, Pat Murphy, and he said "SURE." He quickly learned the bass parts to six of 3 Steps Backwards' songs in a week's time, which was just soon enough so he could play with them in their next show at the Youth Center in Port Washington. They rocked the building and everyone that saw them thought it was definitely one of their best performances ever.
They continued to work with Pat and make new music, playing such venues as the 2004 high school talent show at their school. After the 03-04 school year had ended, 3 Steps Backwards played their biggest venue yet, the Port Washington Band shell. This was the last time they'd be known as 3 Steps Backwards.
Currently the band is working on perfecting their older songs, and continues to write new music at almost every practice. They are also working on getting their music outside of the cramped confines of Port Washington, and spread it out across Wisconsin, and beyond.
