Thomas Kattz

About the Artist: Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, sideman, web technician, amateur photographer from Cape Breton, NS. Thomas Katts has been hitting maritime stages since he was a teenagers. Set to release his first cd(way overdue), it should be out sometime in 2007.

Tom Mills began playing guitar, self taught, at the age of 3 in his kitchen on his dads 1956 Gibson acoustic. Although he enjoyed the pots and pans more at this age, it didnt take very long before he got his own guitar a small-bodied Degas for $15 for grading and began playing concerts at age 9. His home was a virtual musical playground with various members of his family including uncles and a grandfather who always brought their guitars, mandolins, fiddles, button accordions to the house each week. He even had a couple uncles who came all the way from England in the early 1970s to sing the songs of the old country, mostly Irish ballads. This rich musical heritage is featured in one of his new songs to be recorded called The Farm (SOCAN). A song all about his familys immigration to this country and in particular to the Marion Bridge Road back in the 1920s. Many, many tunes were played til the wee hours of the morning at this farmhouse and any time Tom and his family would visit someone would always put a guitar in his lap. I guess it was destiny that he would eventually write a song about the whole experience.

While he had early rock and blues influences, he couldnt get enough of guitar superstars such as Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Mark Knofler, and even local stars such as Gordie Sampson, Jimmy Rankin, Dave MacIsaac, JP Cormier, & John Allen Cameron.
