It was 20 years ago today (well, OK, more like 25!) ...
that Craig Evans and Brad Tucker started singing together, and over the last two decades they have covered a lot of musical ground. Neither could have guessed how long that partnership would last!
The Taters play an eclectic mix of roots-rock, power-pop, country, and Americana, a sound that's been compared favorably to that of the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, The Beatles, the Mavericks, and Nick Lowe. Billboard magazine calls it "American roots-rock with thoroughly modern, totally hip sensibilities". No Depression magazine describes it like this: "Think 'Beatles For Sale' if Marty Robbins were a primary influence instead of Carl Perkins." The Washington Post says the Taters "Successfully combine the best elements of Buddy Holly with the vocal harmonies of the Everly Brothers."
The Taters have twice won the Billboard Magazine Critic's Choice since their debut in 1997, and their music is played in over 10 different countries around the world. "Just One Night" is their 4th album together and features several new original tunes along with live versions of some of the most popular cover requests. Regardless of styles or instrumentation, the melody has always been there, and kept them on track. It's obvious to listeners that their music is still getting stronger all the time, and now those new to the band can get a glimpse of what goes on during a live show the interplay and harmonies, and just the wide range of song styles that make up their musical identity.
"The songs, and the joy of playing them, has always been what drew us to music in the first place," Craig admits. "We've never been about attitude, and I think that's what keeps our sound fresh. The things that made a song good in 1920 will still be the things that make a song good in 2020, and that's how we approach our writing and performing. For the new album, we've been playing live so much over the last few years that the songs have really had a chance to develop.
"Our individual influences are all over the map, and we don't make any apologies for their prominence in our sound", explains Craig. When you hear the final product, though, you realize you're not listening to another retro band, but something new - a fresh mix. You'll recognize a lot of the individual flavors, but you've never tasted this combination before.
Gordon Ely of Billboard Magazine describes the Taters as "determinedly-and gleefully-forging a path with no limits or end in sight. This is music for which you've been waiting a long, long time... Without a trace of self-consciousness or pretension, the Taters draw up a formula that can rightly be claimed as their own".Have you performed in front of an audience?Yep, all over the southern, mid-Atlantic area.

Very delicate and atmospheric. Very pretty songs. Kind of sounds rather like a mature version of The Jayhawks, with the Big O doing the lead vocals, if you don't mind me saying so.
