The Road is based in Boston and New York City. Now in its seventh year in several incarnations, The Road has established itself as a band of savvy and skill with an ever-growing following and ever-expanding show list. The band's influences are various and wide-ranging, from classical to straight ahead jazz, from funk to electronic alternative. Put together, the band members' talents and musical interests have combined to create a unique and edgy sound, blending rich acoustic harmonies with lush synthesized sounds and complex rhythms with intricate arrangements. Lyrically soulful and musically passionate, The Road is blazing its own trail.
Band/artist history
As with most good things, The Road started more or less by accident. In the early months of 1998, Greg Wilson and Aaron Moulin were both students at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, Greg working on his Ph.D. in English and Aaron on his B.S. in biochemistry. Brad Maynes, Greg's roommate and fellow graduate student at Brandeis also in biochem, introduced Greg to Aaron and after a few jam sessions - Greg on trumpet, Aaron on guitar and Brad on bass - the three decided to get more serious. In the summer of '98, 3607 (so named for Greg and Brad's old apartment number) was formed, and the three began to play a few local gigs at the school. But there was a limit to what three people could do together, and so in January of 1999 Geoff Wilson, Greg's brother, was added on drums and Todd Whitecross, Brad's cousin, came in on rhythm guitar; Greg assumed the duties of lead vocalist. This final incarnation of 3607 lasted a year, during which the band played a local radio gig and appeared in shows in Boston, Northampton and Springfield while developing a substantial amount of original work. But other work and responsibilities intruded, and the band broke up in early 2000. Aaron, Greg and Geoff stayed in touch, but were mostly busy with school and work until the summer of 2001, when a mutual friend introduced Greg to Jeff Gerstein, bassist and engineer extraordinaire. Learning about Jeff G.'s interest in starting to play and record again, Greg played him an old four-track demo tape, and he was hooked. In the off time both Greg and Aaron had been busy working out song ideas, and combining new and old material they, Geoff Wilson and Jeff Gerstein reformed as The Road in the late summer of 2001. After a rather lengthy search and a few false starts, the band was lucky enough--thanks to a fortunately-timed post on Craig's List--to find Mike Kulbeda to round out the band's core of musicians in the summer of 2003. After a very successful year of gigging and recording, Mike left the band a year later to return home to his native Chicago, and nearly simultaneously Geoff Wilson's role in the band changed rather significantly as his time was taken up by full time commitments to other bands; Chris Devine, of Moontide fame, was immediately recruited to step in for Mike at rhythm guitar, while Chris Esposito (again thanks to the amazing Craig's List) joined as the band's primary drummer in September of 2004. But the band was not done with its changes; in November of that year Chris Devine left due to time constraints, and Chris Esposito followed suit several months later for similar reasons. More auditioning and Craig's List posts followed, and after a careful search during the winter "offseason" Greg Girardin entered the band as its second guitarist, followed closely thereafter by Sean Mullan on drums. One final change remained; also pressed for time, long time bassist Jeff bowed out reluctantly but gracefully in May of 2005, replaced almost immediately (in a shockingly efficient manner, all things considered) by Sean’s friend Scott Cascella to round out the current lineup.
