THER.I.P.Y. (an acronym meaning, The Radiance Is Purely Yours) has been bringing you that "Fi Fi" way before their new exclusive single off "Strictly for the Streets", one of the hardest underground mixtapes to come out the South in a recent times. Ken Jo and Paul D started out together back in 1999, at the ages of 16 nd 17, on a mission to simply make rap music better. Ken Jo had been doing beat production since the age of 12, and it was just a matter of time before the two met in Albany, Georgia, to form THER.I.P.Y. With their first independent album, "Off The Rip", featuring the likes of Shawn Jay from Field Mob and members of Suthern Klick (Ole E and Pachino), already under their belt, THER.I.P.Y. is now ready to take the rap game to the next level. Two years, and a whole lot of sweat and tears later, Ken Jo and Paul D have matured into the artists who can accomplish this seemingly impossible task.
Their new underground mixtape, in actuallty, is not a mixtape at all. "The plan was to jack about half the beats, you know, just to give people something to hear before the real album came out", Paul D said at an interview after their recent show at The Fox in Albany with Mystikal. But what resulted is a 16 track album with more than 13 original tracks from Ken Jo, now only 19, and already a producer being crowned as one of the best in the South by such artists like Field Mob. What really speaks volumes about these two unique artists and their underground album is that the first 1000 copies are free. Not free snippets; but a entirely free album. "We wanted to let folks know that it's not about the money. It's about getting them to know that THER.I.P.Y. ain't playing games", Ken Jo said in an interview at their studio in Tallahassee, Florida. Shawn Jay and Smoke of Field Mob dropped by the Southern Chamber during the recording of the mixtape and are featured on "Underdog" and "You Done Came Up Short Again". "Strictly for the Streets" features a style of music that hasn't been introduced before. There is a sense of soulful grittiness that comes from every track. Whether it is the live bass guitar in "Pussy Ain't Hard to Come By" and "You Got Your ID?", or the scratching and mixing of DJ Tremaine, arguably one of Georgia's hardest dj's, on tracks like "Choosin", there's just something about THER.I.P.Y. that you can't put your finger on.
Some critics have compared them to Outkast and Goodie Mob, but their not quite like them. Others have likened Paul D, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, but 13 years in Southwest Georgia makes him not quite like them either. Ken Jo brings complex rhymes and a cool crunkness about him to add even more complexity to THER.I.P.Y.'s sound. Maybe this originality has something to do with their vision. THER.I.P.Y. stands for "The Radiance Is Purely Yours", a name that are words of encouragement to anyone trying to let their light shine in this dark world. Or maybe it could be their "do or die" mentality motivated by the loss of their friend, Chris Mitchell, (aka Jangalang) who died in a pick-up basketball game in late 2002, a tragic incident which linked them up with Gerard Singfield, manager of THER.I.P.Y., and co-CEO of their newly formed record label, Jangalang Entertainment. Whatever it is, THER.I.P.Y.'s got it and Ken Jo and Paul D are committed to doing what it takes to make sure you get it. Are you ready?
