The Pluckers
'The Pluckers' are Klaus Christoph, his son Eric, Jim and Barbara Atherton and Marlo Lewis. The musical elements: guitar, bass, 5-string banjo, mandolin and vocals with 2, 3 and 4 part harmonies. The repertoire: an exciting and eclectic mélange of bluegrass, rock, and country tunes. The bands driving artistic vision was best described by Klaus as anything we can get away with.
Band/artist history
The Pluckers were started in 1996 by Klaus (banjo), his sons Eric (bass) and Jeff (guitar). At that time we played only for family and friends. When Jeff left the area, the band went through a couple of guitar players before Jim joined. In 1998, Jim's wife, Barbara joined the band as a backup singer, and rythm player (spoons, shakers, etc.). The band really did not get out of the basement until 2003. That's when we started playing open mikes and got hired to play some Friday/Saturday night gigs. Marlo (mandolin) joined the band in January of 2006, and added more vocals and harmonies to the sound.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes. We do a number of private functions. We also play at Tiffany Tavern in Alexandria, VA. We also host and open mike there on alternate Tuesdays. It's a lot of fun
Your musical influences
We are into acoustic music. Mostly bluegrass, some country, and occasionally an old rock and roll tune. Personally, Flatt & Scruggs and Stanley Brothers music influenced my playing. Others in the band come from blues background, and rock background, so we do end up with an interesting sound as a bluegrass band.
