The Phantoms
Who are "The Phantoms"?
If you lived in Boston during the 80's and went to any rock clubs, you probably know who they are. You may have even seen them driving around in a convertible MG with bleached blonde mohawks, or arriving at the Modern Theater in a checker cab stuffed with all their gear! Did you catch them as they unapologetically belted out a blast of controversial songs, LIVE on Channel 5 TV -
the TV station had to announce a DISCLAIMER!!
Stay tuned to PunkTV - This was one of Boston's most inscrutable punk rock bands.
"The Phantoms" were the first 3 piece band with 2 females, a lead guitarist/songwriter/vocalist and a woman on bass guitar, to play the club circuit in Boston during the late 70's through the mid 80's
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
The Phantoms were formed in 1976 by two friends and bandmates when their band Carnelian broke up; they began writing songs, learning new instruments. They recruited bass players and keyboard players as they needed and could find, with Micky on guitar and Angelo on drums; trading lead vocalist duties. The Phantoms were among the earliest Boston punk bands to include female members; at one point Angelo was the only male Phantom out of four.
After various personnel changes and a few hundred gigs, the band jelled around Micky on lead vocals and guitar, Angelo on drums, Carolyn on bass and backing vocals and Dash on keyboards; playing more hundreds of gigs until 1987, including a two-year or so period that Carolyn left and was replaced by Tas Calo of the Boston band Zoo Types.
