the neutrals
Our sound
the neutrals can best be described as acoustic driven pop/rock with a soulful lead vocalist. Catchy lyric lines coupled with a solid groove creates a recipe for some great live music.
Our style
Our songwriting reflects many different styles. In our songs you can hear evidence of soul, motown, rock, jazz and funk all seamlessly blended into an enjoyable audible experience.
Our experience
If you add together the combined playing experience of all four band members, it would span over 5 decades. As a band we have been playing together live for over a year around various venues in Napa, Vacaville, Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Grass Valley and Rocklin.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
A brief history of The Neutrals:
The band was formed in 2004. Their songs, however, have existed for far longer. Being raised around a musical family, The Neutrals' front man, Nick Cohen, grew up singing and harmonizing with his brothers and sisters. In 1994, his parents bought him an acoustic guitar, which became his medium for writing songs. For the following ten years, he continued writing music and refining his sound.
Fast-forward to 2004: Nick found himself with an opportunity to play a local music festival. Quickly deciding on the name "The Neutrals", Nick and his lead guitarist, Rich Smith, played an acoustic set, opening for some of the bigger bands. Their music was well received and with the encouragement of a small fan base, The Neutrals began planning to record a full-length studio album. Studio session musicians Adam Sanders and Dave Newlin lent their talents with drums and percussion. Meanwhile, Nick and Rich hooked up with drummer Steve Trovao and bassist Steve Thomas. Now a four-piece, The Neutrals started playing live shows around Sacramento, establishing a broader fan base and building hype for the upcoming release of their studio recording.
Shortly after their CD release concert, lead guitarist, Rich Smith left the band to pursue his own musical interests. Coincidently, an old friend and accomplished guitar player, joe Najera, happened to touch base with Nick the very week of Rich's departure. joe joined the band that week and has been a great addition to their sound ever since.
They have performed in different settings throughout the Greater Sacramento Area, ranging from rockin' outdoor festivals to a more mellow coffeehouse atmosphere with a "storytellers" vibe. Hope you enjoy the music.
