THE KOKOON is an art and film influenced new wave - indie duo that recently released their second longplayer "Berlin". THE KOKOON are the former ballet dancer Danyx Simone: vocals, bass, keys and multi instrumentalist and sound engineer/producer Dirk Henry (his credits include mixing work for "we are scientists"(crap attack 06) and engineers' and musicians' work for german multi platinum selling act: "Wir sind Helden" among many other great but less "successful" bands).
Band/artist history
When the former ballet dancer Danyx Simone and musician Dirk Henry decided to start THE KOKOON early 2000 in Berlin it wasn't clear for both of them how long this journey would take and where it would go. They both shared the same interests like their strong passion for so called "arthouse" films especially from the 60's (Godard,Truffaut, Antonioni, Fellini, Kubrik etc.) as well as the same musical references like 70's Roxy Music, Talking Heads, David Bowie or Siouxsie & the Banshees, just to name a few. From this background they've started to create the sound of THE KOKOON. It's a music that combines both influences into a very personal, story telling form, like little movies - always more than just a selection of songs and their lyrics. It's carried by the versatile, often androgynous but also sensitive character of Danyx's voice. The music varies from edgy to hard, smooth to sick but never soft really. THE KOKOON always leaves the standard , sometimes plays with it to destroy it finally - like movies without happy end or with open end. And they work slow. Two long-players in eight years don't seem to be many but every new LP takes as long as it needs to feel right and they select carefully from their impressions and inspirations until they start to work on recordings and all visuals they always create on their own like cover artwork, web site and videos. Their second and latest LP "Berlin" released in 2008 (New Average Records) is an ironic musical diary about city life style including all ups and downs, hopes and fears, being pushed or exhausted - sometimes both at the same time - and also being sick of it all. But there's always a smile remaining and the certainty that life doesn't care how you feel - it just goes on Living in big cities always fascinated artists, writers and musicians as inspiration for creativity - the melting pot of nations and mentalities, big dreams and failures, living on the edge as well as being isolated and lonly among millions of people around you - so do THE KOKOON. The idea of a musical reflection about the modern way of life in big cities grew up during their London time in 04-05 just after the debut release "erase". The songwriting took shape there and was finally recorded during 06-07 in Berlin. Their first LP "erase" released in 2004 is all about tunnels and the feelings and stories you could imagine by that. You enter a tunnel by car for example and you know there may be only one exit. You don't know what will come when you leave the tunnel but it definitely will happen. It's claustrophobic and exciting at the same time and there's no choice really - you have to move forward, in the stream of the others - but there's quiet a bit of space for little stories in the meanwhile
