Band/artist history
This is a story reconstructed from memory, which we all know grows dimmer an dimmer until suddenly it’s 25 years later, and each person’s remembrance of their memories become substitutes for the facts. But the basic facts are these: In September of 1979 Jeff C met Curtis K when they were both attending the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, SK. They decided to form a band, JC handling guitars and CK covering keyboards usually, and in 1983 they found Alec T playing drums in a local church choir. At this time, they settled on the name The Independents. About a year after that, they added on bass Jeff B, who was also at the U of S. The quartet came to the attention of local music industry promoter Ron S, who suggested the band could easily make it on the national Alternative/Indie music scene, and became the band’s manager and executive producer. They released the recording Save Yourself in the summer of 1985, on Rockin’ Rod Records, and got distribution through Midnight Records in New York. Within the year however, the band was no longer an entity: they simply burned out quickly and brightly and packed it in, while the various members dealt with personal issues, pursued other projects, or simply went on with their lives. Keeping in touch with each other over the years, they finally got around to recording their follow up to Save Yourself 24 years later in July of 2009: The Elkford Sessions. (PART II - The preceding synopsis is the original introduction to The INDEPENDENTS page. Having established that much of the story, this now addresses what happened in the intervening 25 years.) Well, soon after the breakup of the band, Curtis moved out of town permanently and Alec temporarily - Curtis went west and Alec went east. Jeff and Jeff kept low profiles for a while, then about the autumn of 1987 got the itch to play again and sought new players, specifically a bassist and drummer as JB moved to guitar. They landed a gig in January 1988, but the drummer bolted 3 days before showtime. Alec, who had since returned to the city, was called upon to hold down the drummers' throne, and with new bassist Warner B in tow, they got through that gig and played around town for the next few months. As well, they recorded five new songs in a local studio, from the pens of one or the other of the Jeffs. These songs, plus a few additions, made up the cassette only EP "Train of Thought." So, here's 3/4s of the Independents, known as THE STYPES (from an old Indies' joke about "Styping" the lyrics if you couldn't remember them - a nod to REM's Michael Stipe and his unintelligible vocal delivery). The Stypes were a good band - not as explosive as the Independents but good in a pinch. And they could do something the Indies' could never do - take an average song and make it sound OK. Unfortunately, Jeff B himself moved permanently out west also, leaving JC to keep The Stypes together using a rotating cast of players until he finally folded the operation in the summer of 1991. But he kept up with his music for a decade and a half, and finally as the internet became a viable forum for musical expression, he resurfaced as JC Mosquito....... about the same time as JB also showed up as Road Apples. And they still sound like themselves. And there you have it.
