Origin of The Gideon Leeches In the mid-19th century, nestled deep in the Appalachian mountains, there was a mining town called Dun Hollow, built on veins of silver and secrets. At the height of its prosperity, a preacher named Gideon Thorne arrivedtall, pale, with eyes like clouded glass and a voice that could make grown men weep or kneel. He preached salvation through suffering. The blood you spill shall sanctify the soul, he often said. And the townsfolk, wrung dry by the mines and clinging to hope, listened. But Gideon was no man of God. The sermons grew strangerconducted in the mines, lit by candles made of tallow and bone. The faithful were marked, not with ash or oil, but with small black leeches, pressed to their flesh. They drink your sin, Gideon whispered. They carry it down, to the deep God. The leeches did more than drink blood. They whispered in dreams. They fed on guilt and grew fat on despair. Soon, the marked began to changepale skin, sunken eyes, teeth too long. They shunned the sun, speaking in tongues and bathing in the black water that seeped up from the earth. When a stranger wandered into towna doctor named Elias Rowehe found Dun Hollow empty on the surface. No children, no dogs, just silence. Below, in the collapsed shafts, he found something else. A cathedral of flesh carved in the rock. Pews made of bone. And in the pulpit, Gideon himself, half-man, half-mass of writhing, glistening leecheseach bearing the face of someone Elias once knew. They sang to him. They begged to be fed. Elias burned the shaft. He thought it was over. But the fire didnt kill them. It only scattered them. Now, they are whispered of in hushed voicesthe ones marked by the leech, the followers of Gideon. They travel town to town, promising healing, promising absolution. And always, the same price: a single leech, pressed to the skin. The infection begins. They are The Gideon Leeches. And they are always hungry.
