4 Teenage Brothers forming a group of musicans we like to call "Amundsens Flag" or "The Flag" for short. Captivated by the greats of music history we want to contribute what we can to the spirit of Rock'n'Roll and get a whole lot of fun and self satisfaction in doing so.
Band/artist history
Amundsens Flag has gone through a wide range of name changes since they have been together which include, DSM 4, Clown Stabber, Forgotten Rose and the now Amundsens Flag. The essence of the band first started in 2000 when Bronte bought an old cruddy guitar from cash converters along with a little amp in Sydney. Although the sounds from the amp were horrendous the idea of playing an electric guitar was thought to be excellent by both of his brother Wilba and Olly. Bronte had been learning his guitar for quite a few months before Wilba decided to buy and learn the instrument himself he bought an old Peavey guitar (he still plays today) along with a slightly bigger Peavey amp compared to Bronte’s. The two would often play their guitars in there rooms for hours in a day only occasionally coming together and playing the two guitars together. Olly was also very into the idea of playing and for a start was thinking about playing the bass guitar but after a while he decided after playing a little at the school that he would be more suited to play the drums. In the mid year of 2000 Olly decided he needed a drum kit so that all three of the brother could have a bit of a jam every now and then, so he practically drained his bank account and bought his first drum kit which he still plays today. The first few jams sounded very average but to be able to play some actual songs that famous artists play was a great feeling and they would practice every chance they got. The drums would overpower everything because of the small practice amps that Wilba and Bronte had some of the first songs they would play were Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer and Freak by Silverchair. The band went on like this for a fair while until the boy’s uncle Nigel came along to live on the farm while working at Ceduna as a Psychiatric nurse. Nigel was a very outgoing man who often got up at karaoke nights and sang many songs and soon joined in with the band as the front man. The band begun to start writing there own songs and with the purchase of Wilba’s new Marshall Amp, a microphone was able to be hooked up to it as well so that Nigel’s voice could be heard. The band now had two originals In Your Mind and Schnell which they were very proud of and to play them was a feeling like no other. Ryan Watson one of their mates from school was adopted as their bass player and quickly picked up the songs. Near the end of that year the band had their first live performance at the Wirrulla Football Club (their local club) under the name of DSM-4 which was changed on the day to Clown Stabber. The band hadn’t been playing there new songs for very long and were extremely nervous after the day of football which they all played they went back to their band room and practiced there songs and also made up a rip off song of Casey Cambers, Am I Not Pretty Enough the song had tainted lyrics and heavy parts that were certainly not evident in the actual song. The three songs wend down very well and they were called up to do them again. There were some great responses to there original songs which they were all very proud of. Through playing various gigs the band gradually got money together and bought there first PA which helped a great deal in the sound and having something to plug the microphone in. As the next year went on the Bronte started to sing a few songs at practices which included, Pure Massacre (Silverchair) and Repeat (Grinspoon). By the end of the year partly because of Nigel moving Bronte took over as the front man of the band and the band changed their name to Forgotten Rose. The band played many gigs around the place and had a whole new line up of original songs including Sleep Now and Masters Slave along with learning a lot of covers so that they could preform for a night. It was in the year 2004 when a man by the name of Judd Evans became very interested in the band and soon became Forgotten Roses manager. He was a very outgoing person who brought the best out in the band and did everything in his power to help them. The band went to another and perhaps their final name change to Amundsens Flag. Sam Hall a mate of the bands also came up and sang a few songs at most gigs. At a gig in Smokey Bay Ryan was away and the band needed someone to fill in on bass. They called up there mate Hippie (Mark Greenfield) who was more than happy to come and play. Hippie was very experienced with music being in lots of bands before and was very handy with working the mixing board and the EQ not to mention his skill on the bass. He also sang a couple of songs for the band. Due to lack of practice and interest Ryan left the band to go on a solo career and Hippie came on board. They have recorded an EP with some much liked songs. In the year 2005 Amundsens Flag have played some excellent gigs and have been quite respected for their talent in the area.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We tour around the country in South Australia, what little money we make fuels only our equipment, fuel and well....ourselves...its worth traveling 3 hours and spending another 3 hours setting up just for those few hours of audio bliss (providing nothing broke in transit)
Your musical influences
Our sound could be resmbles somewhat by the often simplistic and unique chord progressions of Nirvana whilst adding a pinch of 80's rock complexity and melody......we are inspired by the greats such as AC/DC, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin etc...
What equipment do you use?
We are only young, and their is really nothing overy defining about the equipment we use bar the fact that it comprises 50% of gaffa tape (which is even used to hold the bridge firm on one guitar)
Anything else?
Please check out our Web Site at: www.geocities.com/amundsensflag It needs to be updated but u shall get a good idea of who we are, website and audio is all created by us.
